It’s that time of year when it seems everybody is getting married, having a birthday, having a baby, throwing a ‘just because the sun is shining’ party, and you find yourself with a million different invites to a million different events, requiring you to put together a million different outfits.

And on top of that you have to buy a million gifts for the brides-to-be (bridal showers), the birthday girls (or boys), the moms-to-be (baby showers). Plus there’s mother’s day coming up on the 8th of May, and all those graduations in May and June adding to the list of gifts you have to buy and outfits you have to put together to attend dinners and receptions and such.dresses on sale at Macy's friends and family

May to August are for many the most fun months of the year, but late spring to late summer can prove to be a very expensive time of year. Even for those of us who don’t have a full calendar of events to attend, the warm weather and bright sunny days compel us to go out and do things, which requires us to have suitable clothes and shoes and accessories to keep us looking and feeling our most confident best.

Lucky for us, Macys is holding a Friends & Family sale from April 24th – May 2nd.

red lace dress macys friends and family saleSo we can pick up a few new items of clothing for our summer 16 wardrobe, plus buy gifts for all the moms on our Mother’s Day Gifts list, all the friends and family members for whom we are going to have to buy birthday presents, graduation gifts, baby shower and bridal shower gifts. And gifts for the guys on our lists too!

So what are you going to be purchasing from Macy’s during Friends & Family sale week?

Coachella fashion time of year again

We’ve been under a rock apparently. Coachella 2016 started since April 15th and round 2 ends tomorrow April 24th. (You can watch live via Coachella.com). We’re just in time to get in a coachella fashion post before the event ends tomorrow.

Let’s start with the 2016 celebrity Coachella fashion…

We browsed through some pics on Vogue.com a moment ago to see what the celebs wore to Coachella this year. Among our favorite looks was Kendall Jenner’s denim shorts and black sleeveless cropped top look which we’ve tried to copy below.

Our copy is not a duplicate of the peices Kendall wore. It’s just a copy of of the look. So our pieces are not the items worn by Kendall.

copy kendall jenners coachella 2016 denim shorts black crop top gladiator sandals fringe bag look

The shorts are Alexander Wang destroyed denim shorts which come with a $300 price tag via farfetch.com. The top is a Dion Lee ‘Vertigo’ knit crop top which comes with a $390 price tag aso via farfetch.com. The other pieces include a pair of gladiator sandals, a fringe leather bag, hoop earrings, a choker style necklace, a brown leather belt and brown lens oversized sunglasses.

More celebrity Coachella fashion…

How about this picture from Reese Witherspoon’s Instagram in which she’s wearing a pair of blue and white print shorts from her #DraperJames lifestyle brand with a basic white t-shirt looking all happy and carefree.

Rese Witherspoon instagram picture - coachella fashion
Rese Witherspoon instagram picture via @reesewitherspoon on Instagram – captioned: “#Coachella poolside fun ???????????? (Shorts: @draperjames, link in bio!)”

Reese does look more beach ready than Coachella festival ready. But Coachella isn’t just about the actual festival event itself it would seem. There are other parties and celebrations and life enjoyment activities that don’t necessarily require attire with a “coachella” vibe.

Kylie’s little black dress

The Row Aneme silk-satin mini dressOn one of her Coachella outings Kylie Jenner was seen wearing this $1,950 The Row Black Aneme Silk Satin Dress with a basic white t-shirt under it. She finished the look with combat style boots and a Louis Vuitton head scarf. We liked Kylie’s look as well.

What is Coachella?

Our answer: A music festival that takes place in some valley out in California

The right answer (assuming Wikipedia accuracy):

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (commonly referred to as Coachella or the Coachella Festival) is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. It was founded by Paul Tollett in 1999 and is organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Live. The event features many genres of music, including rock, indie, hip hop, and electronic dance music, as well as art installations and sculptures. (source wikipedia)

How old is too old to attend the Coachella festival?

Our answer: We remember one year (2014) reading that Michelle Pfeffier and some other 40-something, 50-something and 60-something year old ladies had attended Coachella. Some of the articles were written to give the impression that perhaps Coachella isn’t for women of that age. We’re sure men of that age attend Coachella without anyone raising an eye brow though. But it does seem as if 30 and under is the Coachella main demographic.

Needless to say, since we weren’t even aware it was that time of year, we did not attend Coachella this year. We did not attend last year. We probably won’t be attending next year. We’ve never been to a Coachella festival. What about you?

Made a black pleated skirt

I’m supposed to be making a red jacket and pants suit outfit (since last year!) but I’m still struggling with it, so I decided to make myself a black pleated skirt in the meantime.

the black skirt with burgundy top
Posing in my DIY black pleated skirt paired with a burgundy Forever21 blouse

This is not the best ever made black pleated skirt, but it’s also not the worst. I like the idea of it even if the execution would need to be much improved for it to be outdoors wearable. I made it entirely from my head, which is interesting to me. I guess making clothes straight from your head is easier than making clothes from a pattern?

I even managed to get a zip and buttons put in, although I’m sure I didn’t do it exactly right. But it zips and buttons so I’ll take it.

black pleated skirt zipper and button fastening

As for the red jacket and pants suit…

I am still trying to work on the jacket. I’ve sewn up the front sections and the back sections and I’m now working on the sleeves. This is supposed to be an easy pattern but I guess they mean easy for someone who at least knows something about sewing from a pattern, which I don’t. But luckily my mother was able to help me understand enough to get to the point where I can actually see a jacket beginning to take shape. Still don’t know if I will actually manage to get it done, because the steps ahead seem even more complicated than the ones it took me all this time to conquer. And it turns out the thing is going to have to be lined after all. So I’m not looking forward to trying to figure out how to even start with the lining part. But I’ll buy some lining fabric with the intention of actually getting to that point and making the attempt.

In the meantime I’ll probably try to make something else. It was fun making this skirt.

Is Amazon fashion abandoning low income girls?

Amazon fashion going high end?amazon fashion baja east Unisex Hand Tie Die T-Shirt with Horse Graphic

When we go shopping for clothes on Amazon it’s usually because we’re looking for cheap stuff. Not because we’re cheap, but because we’re among the not so financially fortunate. The Amazon fashion department is known for being a place where girls who don’t have a lot of money to spend on clothes can find reasonably okay looking items for cheap.

Although Amazon has been trying to move in a more high end direction for some time, carrying items by designers such as Giuseppe Zanotti, DSQUARED2, BCBG, Calvin Klein and more, the marketplace has not exactly been a source for finding high end designer merchandise. Basically, because Amazon caters to people who bargain shop out of necessity, certain designers have not wanted their merchandise sold on Amazon. Call it snobbery, or just a sound business decision based on the knowledge that a large number of Amazon’s typical customers cannot afford a Valentino bag, but whatever the case, Amazon has not been able to attract many well-known designer labels to its marketplace. The high end designers haven’t wanted to put their stuff on Amazon either because they don’t think the stuff will sell due to the fact that Amazon’s target demographic can’t afford their merchandise, or because they don’t want their label associated with a name synonymous with thrift and ‘affordable’ quality.

Amazon fashion empire in the works?

Fashion is big business and Amazon knows this. They’re doing pretty well thanks to the millions of low-income and middle income people who flock to their marketplace to shop for affordable clothing, shoes and accessories every day. But imagine how much better they could do if upper income earners and even wealthier folks were shopping their fashion department as well? But to lure these shoppers they need to carry the high end labels that this demographic shops.

In their quest to become a marketplace not just for the poor bargain-shoppers but also for rich people who exclusively shop high end labels, Amazon has set out since about 2012 to transform the Amazon fashion image. They have been on a mission of re-invention with the assumed aim of eventually convincing luxury brands and luxury shoppers that they can do business with Amazon without having to be embarrassed.

In their effort to achieve their goals, they have gone the acquisitions route (Shopbop in 2006 and Zappos in 2009 for example), and also ventured into the fashion reality streaming business, picking up “The Fashion Fund” – a Condé Nast Entertainment produced program documenting the annual fashion design competition sponsored by Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) (watch episodes at amazon.com). On top of that, they are getting involved in the big fashion shows, in 2015 sponsoring the inaugural New York Fashion Week: Men’s event.

Amazon appears to be going all out to establish themselves as a name to be taken seriously in the fashion game.

Amazon fashion ventures includes 7 in-house clothing brands…

According to money.cnn.com, Amazon has also launched 7 in-house clothing brands. If you’ve been on Amazon.com and seen any of the following clothing brands, they are apparently Amazon brands. Not brands that they acquired but in-house brands that they created:

Franklin & Freeman – Men’s dress shoes
Franklin Tailored – Men’s suits and accessories
James & Erin – Women’s clothing
Lark & Ro – Women’s clothing (Also available in Canada)
Society New York – Women’s clothing
North Eleven – Women’s accessories for cold weather
Scout + Ro – Children’s clothing

Whether or not Amazon will become a large enough presence in the world of fashion to convince say Chanel to start putting products in the Amazon marketplace to be drooled over by low income girls remains to be seen. But in the meantime, Amazon is benefiting by being able to offer merchandise from up and coming designers associated with the CFDA (Check out and shop The Fashion Fund designers on Amazon).

For girls like us this is of course exciting only in so far as it provides more interesting things to look at on Amazon. As it is, cheap clothing is seldom very interesting and everybody is selling the same thing. So it’s nice to see more variety and higher quality(?) in the clothing shoes & jewelry department on Amazon.com. Naturally Amazon isn’t bringing merchandise from rising stars to its marketplace to sell to girls for whom a $30 dress is a splurge purchase. So if, like us, you’re still dream-chasin’ and can’t afford to spend $300 on a t-shirt, none of this really matters to you at the end of the day. Unless of course it will eventually come to mean that the Amazon fashion department will start to cater exclusively to people in the middle income and high income bracket.  For now it’s all good. They’re only adding stuff. They’re not taking away anything (yet).

Discovering Lena Hoschek

Lena Hoschek is an Austrian designer.  Her Fall/Winter 2016 collection is currently available for pre-order via Moda Operandi. The collection, according to Moda Operandi, “pays homage to [British] national icons including the Queen and infamous literary characters, Miss Marple and Sherlock Holmes.” Here are some of the items featured in the Moda Operandi Lena Hoschek Fall/Winter 2016 trunk show. We would love to get our hands on some Lena Hoschek FW16 dresses. We love the retro look, although some of the styles we like the most are cut a bit too low at the bodice. But who knows? The price tags for some aren’t so outrageous as to make it a definite unlikelihood that we would ever be able to afford even one. So who exactly is Lena Hoscheck? She’s an Austrian designer who got her start when she was just 24 yeras old. Here’s some info we grabbed from the About page on her website:

Via lenahoschek.com – In November 2005 at the tender age of 24, Lena Hoschek set up her own label in a cosy little atelier at the centre of the Old Town of Graz. Ever since, her name has been synonymous with a nostalgic return to traditional tailoring, classic designs and the ultra-feminine hourglass silhouette, without ever being conventional. A self-proclaimed “truffle pig” as far as fabrics are concerned, Hoschek is always on the look out for sumptuous textiles with a story to tell – a passion she has nurtured ever since she was a little girl. Opulent patterns, exquisite materials and meticulous attention to detail characterise her collections while at the same time epitomising her ethos, which is to value each item of clothing as something timeless and lasting. All Lena Hoschek pieces are lovingly produced with painstaking care at small clothing factories based in Europe.

#RANBonusBox DAWGS blue t-shirt red tank top

Earlier in March I received the 2016 Q1 Bonus Box (#RANBonusBox) from Rakuten Affiliate Network. ( @RakutenMKTG_US via twitter or on Instagram via @RakutenAffiliateNetwork). Among the items inside the box was a gift certificate from #DAWGS (via usadawgs.com) which I used to purchase a blue t-shirt and a red tank top.

DAWGS sells women’s, men’s and kids’ footwear and apparel of the sort you wear when comfort is your number one priority.

The items that I purchased with my Gift certifcate were the DAWGS Basic Crew Neck T-Shirt in blue and the DAWGS Racerback Tank Top in tomato red.

Basic Crew Neck blue t-Shirt

DAWGS blue womens Basic Crew Neck T-Shirt

I figured I’d try to have a little fun taking some pics to show how the t-shirt fits. It’s a nice cute little t-shirt. I like how it fits. I would have liked it more if the sleeves were just a little bit longer. I do have to admit, I would probably not spend $25 on a plain t-shirt ordinarily. Maybe if I was a little bit wealthier, but at my income level, $25 for a simple t-shirt is a bit too much. Sad to have so little in the bank, I know.

dawgs blue womens t-shirt

The outfit: old pair of Mossimo Supply Co skinny jeans, the DAWGS blue t-shirt, old white Nike sneakers, Nike cap, Folli Follie watch, Kate Spade bracelet.

Racerback Tank Top

The tomato red racerback tank top is described on the DAWGS website as “the perfect basic”. It’s made of 95% Super Rayon 5% Spandex. It’s list of features include:

  • Lightweight and soft
  • Scoop neck
  • Sporty racerback
  • Slim fit
  • Modern, longer silhouette
  • Perfect for layering or on its own

DAWGS tomato red womens racerback tank top

This tank top is very fitted. Like the t-shirt it comes with a $25 price tag. I know that’s nothing for some people but for me, it would be really hard to bring myself to a point of being nonchalant about spending $25 on a tank top. I’m not suggesting these items aren’t worth $25. I’m simply saying that a $25 tank top and a $25 t-shirt would constitute extravagant purchases for those specific types of items for my specific budget. But I do find them nice and comfortable and cute.

This orange Valentino pineapple clutch

How cute is this orange Valentino pineapple clutch?

Valentino pineapple box clutch

We love cute little clutch purses as much as any of you; but why do they have to be so expensive? This darling little pineapple box clutch (a Valentino mytheresa.com online exclusive from this season’s Hawaii-inspired capsule collection) will cost you $3,445 to acquire. Why? Well, to be frankly honest we’re not sure exactly what justifies the price tag other than the Valentino name.

Yes, this is a cute little clutch. But it’s made out of plastic. Sure, the lining is leather, and it has little crystal embellishments on the leaves at the top; but does that justify a $3,445 price tag? What do you think?

It looks a wee bit impractical from the inside view, like it won’t hold a whole lot to begin with; and you’ll have to be rummaging through it quite a bit to find that lip gloss if you manage somehow to get more stuffed in than it’s intended to hold. Unless of course you only pack the lip gloss with a couple of other small things. The bag measures 6 inches in height and 4.5 inches in width and 2 inches in depth.Valentino pineapple box clutch inside view

We do get the point that these cute things are created expressly with rich girls in mind and rich girls wouldn’t buy them if they came with a price tag that made them affordable to poor girls. The price tag is what conveys the message that these things are special and that girls who own them are realms above ordinary girls. It’s not so much that the thing is really special at all. We’d probably think twice about buying it even if it only cost $50, because we’d think, cute though it is, it’s such a tiny little thing to cost over $10. (You can tell on what side of the tracks we grew up)

In all seriousness though we’d buy this Valentino pineapple clutch if…

Valentino pineapple clutch mytheresa

If we were rich and spending $3,445 on a tiny little pineapple shaped box clutch just because it tickled us with its cuteness was no issue, we’d buy this bag. Because why not? We have the money. We like it. Buying it won’t hurt us. Buying it won’t hurt anyone else.

In fact, we think we’d be more likely to spend the $3,445 than to spend $50. Because if the price tag was only $50 we’d be more inclined to think we were paying $50 for something that’s worth $10. When the price is way out there at $3,445 you just assume there’s something about the bag (aside from the high end designer label) that makes it worth so high a price tag.

What do you think of this Valentino pineapple clutch?

Would you pay $3,445 to obtain it?

This crystal embellished pink Jimmy Choo clutch

Loving this gorgeous crystal embellished pink Jimmy Choo clutch

Hello you beautiful crystal embellished pink Jimmy Choo clutch! Too bad you cost $2,750 or we would so buy you this very minute!

Crystal embellished pink Jimmy Choo Lockett minaudiere clutch

This Jimmy Choo Lockett minaudiere clutch is available for purchase via mytheresa.com. It’s described as a “compact box clutch” that’s “crafted in pretty pink with gold-tone hardware for a glamorous finish”.

We came across this pink Jimmy Choo clutch while browsing on the mytheresa.com website looking for something to spark our interest. Sometimes fashion gets boring and you browse page after page of merchandise and nothing stirs your shopping impulse. That’s kind of what was happening earlier while we were browsing. Nothing was catching our attention and making us want to buy it. Then we saw this pink Jimmy Choo clutch (buy it here).

Crystal embellished pink Jimmy Choo clutch

Maybe it’s the pretty pink. Maybe it’s the crystals. Or maybe it’s both the pretty pink and the crystals along with the gold wrist strap. We just love this clutch; but the price tag is way out of our affordable budget. Just can’t seem to get to that point where we can afford a $2,750 bag. What about you?

What do you think of this pink Jimmy Choo clutch?

pink Crystal embellished Jimmy Choo clutch

Of course all we’re seeing of this clutch is how it looks in the pictures on the mytheresa.com website. We’re assuming that in person it looks the same as in the pictures but sometimes that doesn’t turn out to be the case. Maybe the pink is darker than it looks on our screen. Maybe the crystals are duller than they appear? Who knows? But we want to imagine merchandise that come with such exorbitant price tags surprise you for the better in person than for the worse. So we’re assuming the bag looks even more magnificent in person than in the pictures. Why wouldn’t it?

How would you style this Jimmy Choo clutch?

Jimmy Choo crystal embellished clutch outfit idea

Our outfit idea uses the Jimmy Choo clutch to accessorize a pink Marni Wool and Cotton-Blend Skirt paired with a lilac/lavender Vilshenko Rose Textured Peasant Top adorned with a yellow leather Marni fringe necklace. Other accessories include purple hoop earrings, a yellow bangle bracelet and a lilac bracelet. For footwear: yellow Christian Louboutin pumps.

Styling with #Macys #Energie black long sleeve top

0

I recently purchased this #Energie black long sleeve top from #Macys. The Energie Juniors’ Judy Shimmer Layering Top was on clearance sale, and I was looking for a black long sleeve top, so I bought it even though I’m not any where close to being a “Junior”. black long sleeve top black black rosette skirt

Today I decided to have a little fun playing with some outfit ideas for the top. These outfits that I put together are just for fun and dress-up play. I wouldn’t actually dress like this to go out. Not the skirt outfits anyway. Maybe the DL1961 jeans outfit with a jacket. But the rosette skirt is way too short and the outfit is over-the-top showy. And the polka dot skirt is too 80s teeny bopper. In fact, the polka dot skirt is from “The Children’s Place”. I picked it up from the thrift store last year not realizing it was a little girl’s skirt.

About the top – it’s a fitted pullover top with allover shimmer, designed for layering (or wearing along). Design features include long sleeves, scoop neckline.  Material is a mix of cotton and spandex.

You’ll find it in the Junior’s section at Macys.

With the polka dot skirt…

black long sleeve top black polka dot tulle hem skirt

I think this look is cute, but Christie Brinkley is probably the only over 35 year old woman who could get away with wearing it. The rest of us would have people in our face criticizing us for not dressing our age, and accusing us of trying too hard to look young.

The black long sleeve top With the DL1961 Instasculpt coated skinny jeans

black long sleeve top black dl1961 instasculpt coated skinny jeans

Last year I was lucky enough to receive an offer to try a pair of jeans from the brand DL1961. I picked their black instasculpt coated skinny jeans because I’d been wanting a pair of leather look jeans. I absolutely love these jeans, but I do think they look better on me when I’m a little fuller than I am right now.

Like the Energie black long sleeve top?

Visit Macy’s online to check if the top is still available. It is regularly priced at $16.

My rating for this top is a 4.0. There’s little if anything to complain about. It’s a simple black long sleeve top with a gold glittery aspect. It’s closely fitted. The sleeves are long and narrow (probably a little too narrow at the wrist). Not a spring or summer top I would say (unless very early spring and very late summer).

The Black and white polka dot skirt

0

I recently purchased this black and white polka dot skirt from Amazon. It’s only $16.99 which is pretty cheap; but it turned out to be a surprisingly decent quality for the price. By decent quality I mean it’s well enough made and looks good enough to be worn out of the house. But no one’s going to think you purchased it as SAKs or anything.

black and white polka dot skirt Michael Kors black blouse styling outfit idea

Today I decided to experiment with styling the skirt. I paired it with the Michael Kors blouse that I purchased from Macy’s a few months ago. (Shop Michael Kors at Macys)

I accessorized with a broad black belt. For jewelry I went with a faux pearl bracelet and faux pearl necklace. And for footwear I went with simple black pumps. Had I included a bag I might have gone for a black clutch or a white clutch or maybe a mixture of black and white.

I think I like this outfit quite a bit. It’s simple and easy. Just a black blouse with a black and white polka dot skirt belted at the waist.

Rating the Black and white polka dot skirt

I’d give this skirt an overall 4.0 rating. I can’t find much to fault. It’s a cheap skirt so I have to grade it according to what it cost. And for a skirt that costs under $20 it’s pretty well made. The material isn’t flimsy. It’s partially lined and you can’t see through it. It fits well. (Find it on Amazon)

black and white polka dot skirt styling outfit idea Michael Kors black blouse

I read some of the poor reviews and based on my experience with the skirt so far I can’t relate. I don’t think it looks like it was made in someone’s kitchen. I didn’t iron it (probably should have) so I don’t know if the customer is right who complained that after she steam-ironed hers the black ran all over the white.

Let’s face it, there’s a reason vendors can afford to sell these items at such low prices. When you buy cheap things you can usually expect poor quality because the manufacturers aren’t spending tons of money to produce high quality good they can turn around and sell for pittance. If the high end guys are cutting corners you can be sure the manufacturers who are making merchandise catered to poor folks are doing even worse. So for the price the quality of this skirt far exceeds my expectations.

Blue top yellow skirt

We came across this picture today and loved how the electric blue turtleneck sweater looked with the bright yellow skirt. So we decided to do a blue top yellow skirt feature to illustrate how a blue top yellow skirt combination might look. This is for the benefit of anyone who happens to be wondering if you can wear a blue top with a yellow skirt.

smiling curly hair woman wearing blue top yellow skirt outfit

Not everyone would venture to pair a blue top with a yellow skirt. And in this case, with the blue being so electric and the yellow being so bright, even more people might shy away from this particular combination. But we see no reason not to wear an electric blue top with a bright yellow skirt.

Our Blue top yellow skirt outfit compositions

turquoise blue top yellow skirt

Here we try a long sleeved turquoise fitted t-shirt top with an yellow Forever21 mini skirt. The top is a poor girl budget friendly top we picked up from Amazon. It’s priced under $10. The quality is acceptable for the price and purpose.

bright electric blue top yellow skirt outfit

And here we pair another poor girl budget friendly fitted t-shirt top from Amazon with a cute little flared yellow skirt. This top is an electric blue color. It’s also priced under $10, so if you’re on a very tight budget and looking for some affordable long-sleeved t-shirt tops, these are viable options in our opinion.

The skirt is also very affordable at only $19.99 via Amazon. We just recently purchased it and like it so much we’ll be buying some additional colors for upcoming features.

Tip: The safest way to wear a blue top yellow skirt outfit is to wear a denim shirt with your yellow skirt.

Some blue top yellow skirt color combo ideas…

Mustard yellow skirt with a navy blue top

Mustard yellow pleated skirt with navy blue silk top

We came across a picture of Taylor Swift wearing a mustard yellow pleated skirt ith a navy blue sweater. The combination worked quite well. She wore red flats with her outfit and accessorized with a blue bag.

Bright Lemon yellow with deep navy? (Maybe not…) – By contrast we saw another lady wearing a bright lemon yellow maxi skirt with a deep navy blue top. That, in our opinion, didn’t look as well-matched as the mustard yellow and navy.

Yellow skirt with a pale blue top

Butter yellow skirt pale baby powder blue top

Another interesting blue top yellow skirt combination: pale blue (powder blue/baby blue) top with a butter yellow skirt. To keep this look soft and clean we think nude shoes and nude accessories work best. And for a bit of added flavor, we suggest yellow lens sunglasses.

JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse – #summer #body #goals #RANBonusBox

We received the 2016 Q1 Bonus Box from Rakuten Affilate Network earlier this month.  In our #RANBonusBox, there was an offer for a complimentary JUS by Julie juice cleanse (#JUSBYJULIE).  We redeemed that offer this week and one of our associates (call him Brian) is currently attempting a JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse in the hope that it might get him off to a fast start as he strives to achieve his #weightloss #goals by #summer. JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse

Spring starts Sunday

We all know what that means. We won’t be able to hide our winter belly under our jackets and coats. While our motto here at My Fashion Wants is love yourself wholly and completely no matter what shape or size you’re in, we appreciate that everyone has a size and shape at which they feel more comfortable in their skin. And sometimes we go above (or below) that size and lose some of our confidence and Joie de vivre.

We stress that it is important to be able to feel good about yourself and to love yourself regardless if you are a size zero or a size twenty-two; but you should also strive to be the strongest and healthiest, most authentic version of yourself.

Enter Brian:

Our associate Brian is 27. He has carried extra weight most of his life. He loves to eat. Who doesn’t? But with too much good eating comes a few extra pounds if you’re one who is disinclined to exercise. And Brian doesn’t love to exercise, so his freestyle eating has meant that he’s been mostly over the weight range for his height. It doesn’t really bother him that much, but he’s been wanting to loose a few pounds (maybe 10 to start and 20 – 30 eventually), and so we thought he would be the perfect person to try the JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse to jumpstart his efforts to shed a few pounds.

Brian’s JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse

Brian started his JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse on Friday March 18th 2016. He did the requisite complaining about the silliness of the whole thing. He’s not one to try “fads”. And the thought of not eating any solid food for 3 days was not appealing to him. But amid his complaining which lasted up to about juice #4 (there are 6 juices to consume for each day), he managed to successfully complete the first day. We’ll check in with him later today to find out how he felt upon waking up this morning, and to track his Day 2 progress.

In the meantime, we’re sure some of you are wondering:

Do Juice cleanses really work?

yoga posing saturday march

From the editor: One of the ways I have restored my body to health when things have gone a little awry is by avoiding solid food for periods of time ranging from 3 days to 30 days. While I have never tried any JUS by Julie cleanses, I have been doing solids-free diets since 2012, so I can attest to the effectiveness of not eating solid food for 3-day, 5-day, 7-day, 10-day, 14-day, 21-day and 30-day stretches. But it’s important to understand that it’s what you do after the cleanse, fast or whatever you want to call it, that makes the difference. Because if you go right back to your unbalanced lifestyle of eating more than your body can burn and not doing any work to help your body burn the excess, you’ll gain back what weight you lose as quickly as you lost it.

Back to Brian…

Brian continues his JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse today. He hasn’t checked in with us yet. We’ll write another update to detail how he manages on Day 2 and Day 3.

In the meantime, if you’d like to try a JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse on us, drop a comment and let us know how we can reach you.

Folli Follie Happy Nugget bracelet #RANBonusBox

Good morning all, happy Saturday. We just wanted to share a quick post about the Folli Follie Happy Nugget bracelet that we received in the 2016 Q1 Bonus Box by Rakuten Affiliate Network. Our #RANBonusBox arrived earlier in the week. We already wrote a post about the Sweaty Betty yoga tank that came in the box. You can read that post here.

They describe as their core philosophy a dedicated focus on “the original design and sale of a fun, versatile, and affordable luxury collection designed to meet the varied and dynamic needs of trend-conscious women and girls worldwide”.

We first discovered Folli Follie last year thanks to the Rakuten Affiliate Network. The first Bonus box we received contained a Folli Follie watch. You can read the post we wrote about that here.

We’ve since been crushing on Folli Follie jewelry but you know how it is with the struggle. We have some items on our wishlist and hope to get them off our wishlist and into our closet this year. Check out our Instagram to see the Folli Follie items we’re eyeing for purchase some time in 2016.

Meanwhile, we’re thrilled to have received this Folli Follie Happy Nugget bracelet in the Q1 Bonus box.

#Yoga in a Sweaty Betty tank- thanks #RANBonusBox

Do you start your mornings with #yoga in a Sweaty Betty yoga tank?

Hello all, we know we’ve been missing in action for a few days. That’s because our editor-in-chief is facing some personal challenges. She will be undergoing surgery on Monday and so things have been a bit off schedule and will remain off schedule until at least April. But we wanted to get something posted before Monday, and thanks to the #RANBonusbox from @Rakutenmarketing_US ( and the things that came in the box, including a Sweaty Betty #sweatybetty #yoga tank), we can probably get a couple of posts up by Monday.

If you don’t know about the #RANBonusbox…

The RanBonusBox is a little box of awesome goodies that the folks at Rakuten Marketing send out to a group of publishers who belong to their Rakuten Affiliate Network. We’ve been very lucky to have been one of the 50 publishers chosen to receive the 2016 Q1 Bonus box. We also received bonus boxes in 2015 and we discovered many interesting brands thanks to the Bonus Box. We now regularly use products from some of the brands, and without question these products have enhanced our lives.

The 2016 Q1 Bonus box contained a fun yoga tank from the British brand Sweaty Betty. Here are some pictures of our editor in chief wearing the Sweaty Betty Avesha Yoga Tank earlier this morning to illustrate that it’s a great tank even for ladies with big tummies.

For the last few years Adela (aka Monica) has lived with very large tumors in her stomach that have made her look permanently pregnant. But you can barely tell just how large her stomach is in this yoga tank from Sweaty Betty. Sure you can see that it’s large, but you would never guess that it’s so large she’ll be undergoing a hysterectomy in just a few days because the tumors have reached a size that her stomach can no longer house.

Sweaty Betty Knock Out Avesha yoga tank

So if you’re someone with a stomach that makes you look several months pregnant (or if you are several months pregnant), and you’re looking for a stylish tank top you can wear to do your yoga or other exercise without feeling self-conscious about your stomach, you should consider this Avesha yoga tank or other similarly styled Sweaty Betty tank. You can visit the Sweaty Betty website here. You’ll probably be wanting to buy a few things. We know we sure do.

Here’s what the tank looks like from the back.

Sweaty Betty Knock Out Yoga Tank

If we have a complaint about this tank it’s that the material seems a little thin. It’s 83% polyester and 17% linen. It has a bit of see-through. But we absolutely love the style. For the lady who wants to look stylish working out, but needs the cover-up for her stomach, this tank style is perfect.

Our editor-in-chief rates her Avesha yoga tank 5 stars because it does such an amazing job of minimizing her stomach. Sharing these pictures with her stomach front and center is something she would usually have been too embarrassed to do, so she thanks Sweaty Betty for the Avesha tank and Rakuten Marketing for the Bonus Box. And she encourages women who are embarrassed and self-conscious about their stomach for whatever reason, to find the right style of clothing and work with what they’ve got.

Like, fan and friend yourself first and foremost.

Thanks for reading and see you again soon.

These gorgeous sandals are only $825. Totally affordable (by comparison to shoes that cost $2000). Unfortunately we can’t get our hands on a pair right now so we’re adding them to our wish list.

Also from Aquazzura are these Desert Sun 105 embellished suede sandals…

For the girl who likes to adorn her feet in jewels and gold embroidery, these sandals deliver with multicolored, speckled rocks artfully dispersed around an orate gold embroidery design.

These beauties are also only $895. They are perfect for the Spring 2016 evening or Sunday afternoon events.

Hey, Spring is around the corner!

Can you believe the winter is almost over? Seems like winter just started yesterday and already we’re weeks away from the official start of Spring 2016. Not that we’re complaining. Winter 2015 was pretty tolerable, but winter is still winter. Although, just this past Saturday we had temperatures in the sixties and people were walking around downtown in shorts. Of course two days later we have snow on the ground again. But it won’t be too long before we can say farewell to the white stuff for another six months.

Of course that’s going to mean putting away the winter boots and pulling out the warm weather footwear. We’re not really prepared for Spring 2016 in that regard. We haven’t refreshed our closet to add new sandals and shoes for 2016. What about you? Have you done your Spring 2016 shoe shopping?

Here are some other hot spring sandals you might like…

Miu Miu red Metallic leather platform sandals

These Miu Miu metallic ruby red leather platform sandas look like they should be a breeze to walk in even for the heels-challenged lady. The thick platform and block heel along with the broad straps seem like they should aide with balance.

These shoes come with a $690 price tag. We’re adding them to our wish list for now.

Dolce and Gabbana Embellished satin sandals

Here are a pair of strappy satin sandals from Dolce & Gabbana with a cute floral adornment at the heel. Something about these make us think about Alice In Wonderland. Maybe these are heels Alice would wear to go on a date? These definitely say fairy world date afternoon spring sandals to us.

The Dolce & Gabbana Embellished satin sandals come with a $1,395 price tag.

Here’s the view from the back…

What do you think of these sandals? Would you wear them? Do you think the $1,395 price tag is justified?

Aquazzura Lily 105 patent leather sandals

Aquazzura Lily 105 patent leather sandals

Here we go again with Aquazzura. These are Aquazzura’s ‘Lily 105’ sandals. They are glossy patent red leather sandals with “dainty straps tempered by a chunky heel”. For us the appeal is in the high gloss red patent leather. These look like a fun pair of sandals, and the price tag is only $675.

Kendall Jenner: the 10 million dollar woman

According to a story we’ve read, Kendall Jenner is allegedly suing a skincare company for using her picture in their ads without her permission. And she’s (allegedly) demanding that the company turn over any profits they’ve made from the use of her picture. And it had better not be anything less than ten million dollars (10 million) because that’s the least amount they would have had to pay had they legally booked her to rep their company.

The company being sued (Cutera) apparently used Kendall’s photo in advertisements for a laser treatment.

In the ad they wrote:

Acne “completely ruined” Kendall Jenner’s self esteem. Visits to a dermatologist for Laser Genesis (a treatment to help reduce redness and scars) has left her with nearly flawless skin.

Guessing the company underestimated Kendall and thought she was already so rich and so famous she wouldn’t be bothered by something as trivial as having them use her picture in their advertising material. They probably figured she was too busy to notice and certainly too busy to bother setting her lawyers on them. Guess they thought wrong.

You would think a company that’s going to run very public ads using the face of a person as famous as Kendall Jenner would know how the law works with regard to that sort of thing, so we’re tempted to think that somebody gave them permission to use the picture. Or else they figured they were covered under the fair use laws.

But Kendall is having none of it. Through her lawyers she has made it clear that she has:

“graced the covers of the world’s most prestigious fashion magazines, including Vogue, Vogue Paris, Vogue Japan, Vogue Brazil, Harper’s Bazaar (shot by Karl Lagerfeld), Allure, GQ, Glamour, Marie Claire, LOVE, Interview, Paper, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, Cleo, Garage, Dazed, Raine and BLANK, amongst others.” (source TMZ)

And we’re assuming the point of that is that with such a resume, the implication that she would be endorsing any company that doesn’t have the name recognition of those listed in the quote is insulting?

Last year Kendall was #16 on the Forbes list of the top 21 highest paid models. And of the names on the list, the #1 position was held by Gisele Bundchen with earnings of 44 million and the #2 position was held by Cara Delevingne with earnings of 9 million.
Update: The lawsuit was apparently dropped

EXCLUSIVE: Kendall Jenner mysteriously dismisses $10 million lawsuit against skin care company she accused of using her face in ads without her permission

    • Kendall Jenner dropped a $10million lawsuit against Cutera on Tuesday
    • Kendall accused the skin treatment company of illegally profiting off her face and name by using them in advertisements
    • The company’s advertisements for their Laser Genesis treatment for acne claimed their treatments were the reason for Kendall’s ‘flawless skin’
    • Kendall said she never did a deal to promote the company and claimed she would charge eight figures for a similar endorsement
    • Court documents don’t explain why Kendall threw out her lawsuit
    • Kendall did, however, dismiss her lawsuit against Cutera without prejudice

Hermes bags heritage auctions Moda Operandi

Hermes Saffron Constance Elan niloticus crocodile
Hermes Saffron Constance Elan Nile croc – image via Moda Operandi

Loving this saffron yellow Niloticus Crocodile Hermes Constance Elan bag. Not so much loving the $57,400 price tag (for a used bag?). Bag is from 2014. It features fold over closure with signature Hermes hardware (palladium).

Shop vintage Hermes bags at Moda Operandi

Looking for a Hermes 30cm Potiron clemence leather Birkin? You can find one at Moda Operandi for $19,000. The vintage bag (2005) is said to be in excellent condition, with signature twist lock closure, two top handles and palladium hardware.

By comparison to say, the Hermes 35cm Matte Rouge Indienne Alligator Birkin bag which comes with a $92,800 price tag, the 30cm potiron Birkin is rather affordable. That’s of course if you’re making at least a million dollars per year. We imagine that’s the average yearly salary of ladies who can afford to purchase Hermes bags.

vintage hermes bags Hermes 30cm Potiron Birkin

Interesting note: The price tag for the potiron Birkin above, while seemingly reasonable by comparison to more expensive Hermes bags, is more than many people earn in income in a year.

Owning a Hermes bag must feel like…

Honestly we can’t imagine what owning an Hermes bag feels like to women who own them. We’re guessing these women must feel pretty special. These bags are status symbols after all. And who doesn’t feel good to know they own things that establish them as people of high status? Who wouldn’t prefer to be considered someone of high status over being regarded a nobody who has nothing? We’re not saying if you can’t afford a Hermes bag you’re a nobody who has nothing. Frankly we think it’s unfortunate that people rely on possessions to establish a sense of superiority and high worth. But the world is what it is. And things have the power that they do. We can’t say that if we came into millions of dollars we wouldn’t buy a Hermes bag just to find out for ourselves what owning a Hermes bag feels like. And this is while knowing fully well that it’s just a bag and can never provide anything in the way of real joy or true pleasure.

Hermes 35cm Matte Rouge Indienne Alligator Birkin 92800

How about this Indienne alligator Birkin bag? Gorgeous right? But check out the price tag ($92,800). This bag is from 2008.

Can you imagine spending nearly one hundred thousand dollars to purchase a used handbag? At the end of the day that’s what vintage Hermes bags are. They are used handbags. And people are paying tens of thousands of dollars to obtain them.

Of course sellers of vintage Hermes bags aren’t marketing their product to ladies like us. And the ladies to whom they are marketing the bags have the money to afford the bags and have no issues with paying tens of thousands of dollars to get their hands on the bags, used or not. These women belong to a world of which we are not a part, have never been a part, and are not likely to ever to be a part. They think differently. For sure a price tag of $92,800 for a bag doesn’t render then stupefied with disbelief.

Are you tired of the Valentino rockstud pumps yet?

It wasn’t so long ago that we were salivating over Valentino rockstud pumps….

But today while working on an outfit idea and trying to find the right shoes to go with the outfit, we realized that our excitement over Valentino Rockstud pumps had waned considerably. So we started wondering if it was just us or if maybe other people were starting to get over their rockstud obsession.

We used to get so excited looking at pictures on Instagram of lucky girls showing off their rockstud pumps. We would have given almost anything to be so lucky that we could afford to buy ourselves a pair. And to be honest, we’d still buy a pair or two if we could afford it. It’s not that we no longer think these shoes are nice. They are still nice shoes and we still like them and would love to try them out. But we’re not at the heart palpitations stage of being in love with the rockstud pump any more.

What about you? Are you still in love with rockstud pumps or has the excitement worn off for you? Maybe you were never rockstud obsessed to begin with? Or maybe you’re one of the lucky girls who happens to have a pair or five in her enviable designer shoe collection?

How many pair of Valentino rockstud pumps do you own?

Valentino Rockstud pumps

While our lust for the rockstud pump has cooled from a hotly raging boil to a tepid simmer, we would still get very excited if we were to come across the sale of a lifetime that allowed us to get our hands on a pair or two. Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could find a brand new authentic pair for under $500? Or better yet under $200?

You can probably find Valentino rockstud pumps on sale somewhere but…

Valentino shoes cost a pretty penny. So even though you can probably find rockstud pumps on sale, the sale price is likely to still be quite high for us ladies for whom high end purchases necessarily have to be delayed until that lucky day when we hit the jackpot of some lottery game or sweepstakes.

Finding rockstud pumps on sale will be of no benefit if spending $99 on a pair of shoes is something that you have to consider from numerous practical angles and calculate your expenses to ensure it’s something you can afford.

The reason: you’re not likely to find a brand new pair of Valentino shoes on sale for under $500. You can probably find a pair of used rockstuds for under $500; but not a brand new pair. And it just wouldn’t be the same buying a used pair. You’re paying hundreds of dollars to purchase shoes that someone else wore and didn’t need anymore. We’d rather use our money on something else than to purchase used shoes. The only way we’d buy used Valentino rockstud pumps would be if the price was under $50. And even then, we’d only do it if the shoes were in really good condition.

What about you?

Would you buy a used pair of Valentino rockstud pumps for $500?

Or would you rather wait and hope that someone decides to hold the sale of a lifetime? We’d rather wait and hope.

Fruzsina Keehn Red Coral And Ruby Ring

Fruzsina Keehn Red Coral And Ruby Ring

How gorgeous is this Fruzsina Keehn red coral ruby and diamond ring?

From the Fruzsina Keehn collection, this ring is said to have been inspired by old Hollywood glamour. It features a red coral gemstone that’s surrounded by rubies set in gold.

The price tag for this beauty is $16,940.

  • 14 RBD set in 0.20ct of diamond
  • 14 rubies set in 12ct of diamond
  • 16.3 gr of gold

This ring is available at Moda Operandi. Looks like they only have it in a size 5 right now, so we would only be able to wear it on our pinky finger if we were so lucky to be able to afford to buy it. As it is, we’re not rich ladies who can afford to purchase $16,940 rings.

What we love about this Fruzsina Keehn Red Coral And Ruby Ring:

  • The red coral gemstone
  • The rubies that surround the gemstone
  • The diamond accents

Anatomy of a red coral

From Wikipedia – In common with other Alcyonacea, red corals have the shape of small leafless bushes and grow up to a meter in height. Their valuable skeleton is composed of intermeshed spicules of hard calcium carbonate, colored in shades of red by carotenoid pigments. In living specimens, the skeletal branches are overlaid with soft bright red integument, from which numerous retractable white polyps protrude.[3] The polyps exhibit octameric radial symmetry.

A short short story:

She was virtual window shopping when she saw the Fruzsina Keehn Red Coral And Ruby Ring. It looked so big and beautiful. She immediately fell in love with it; but then she saw the price tag. Sixteen thousand nine hundred and forty dollars. “Wow”, she thought to herself. She had expected it to be expensive. After all, she was on ModaOperandi.com where they strictly sold high end merchandise. But it was just a ring. So although she had expected it to be too expensive for her to afford, she hadn’t expected it to have a 5 figure price tag.

“How are some people able to afford such expensive things?” she wondered to herself. Her mind ran on a headline she’d seen earlier in the day. It was about Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian and how readers would be jealous to see the inside of their homes. She remembered reading the headline and wondering what accounted for how much fortune some people were able to amass by comparison to others. Was it just being pretty? Was that all that it had taken for the Kardashian girls to rise to such a height of fame and fortune that each of them lived in multi-million dollar mansions and could easily afford to spend sixteen thousand nine hundred and forty dollars on a ring without batting an eyelash?

She wasn’t convinced that it was just because they were pretty. Their prettiness was a big factor; but if just being pretty was all it took to reach that level of success she too should be living in a multi-million dollar mansion and be able to buy herself the Fruzsina Keehn Red Coral And Ruby Ring. But she didn’t live in a multi-million dollar mansion. She lived in a one-bedroom apartment, and she made under $30,000 per year in income even with her Bachelor’s degree. What had she done wrong? She was asking herself that question as she browsed away from the page on the Moda Operandi website. What was the mistake that she made with her life? And was it something that she could fix? Was it possible now that she was thirty-two to start over her life? Was it possible for her to ever be so wealthy that she could afford to spend sixteen thousand nine hundred and forty dollars on a ring because she liked it and wanted it?
