The argan oil hype – is it justified or is the awesomeness of argan oil exaggerated?

Beauty experts have been touting the wonders of Argan oil for a good few years now. Many have been calling it the best ever thing for hair and skin. Some insist that argan oil is so amazing they have been able to toss out all their various bottles and jars of hair and skin products. They insist that argan oil is all they use to achieve and maintain supple youthful skin and sleek, lustrous hair.

With all the hype about Argan oil we wanted to try it ourselves to see if it could possibly be all that people claim.

So we got in touch with Puritan’s Pride. Puritan’s Pride is a company committed to “giving
you the tools to make Healthy Choices for Healthy Living every day”. They sell a wide range of health and wellness related products. They also have an exclusive hair, face and body care line called “Perfectly Pure” and one of the products they carry under this line is the much hyped Moroccan Argan oil. Since we have collaborated with Puritan’s Pride in the past to giveaway some of their other Perfectly Pure products to our lucky readers, we reached out to them to see if they would be willing to provide us with a bottle of their Moroccan Argan Oil to try out and a few additional bottles to give away to our readers. They were kind enough to oblige.

So, for the last few weeks we’ve been putting argan oil to the test using Puritan’s Pride Perfectly Pure Organic Moroccan Argan Oil.

Our editor in chief has been using it in her hair and on her skin, and will soon detail her personal feedback about argan oil, and whether or not the hype is warranted, in a beauty journal entry in the Monica’s Closet blog.

So, Is Argan oil all it’s cracked up to be?

Let’s first examine the claims that are made about Argan Oil.

  • Has conditioning and anti-aging properties
  • Revitalizes skin and hair
  • Treats split ends
  • Minimizes fine lines
  • Moisturizes dry skin
  • Clears up eczema and psoriasis
  • Reduces the visibility of wrinkles
  • Plumps and softens lips
  • Promotes eyelash growth
  • Promotes the growth of thicker eyebrows
  • Fades dark spots
  • Brightens skin tone
  • Evens skin tone
  • Softens even the the driest most brittle hair
  • Leaves hair looking shiny and feeling silky
  • Treats dandruff and dry itchy scalp
  • Thickens thinning hair
  • Re-grows balding hair
  • Lengthens hair

The list of claims could go on and on. Just about any problem you could have with your skin or your hair, someone somewhere swears that argan oil can fix it.

Can you imagine needing only one product for your skin and hair?

Argan oil sounds like everybody’s dream. It’s natural so you don’t have to be concerned about chemical effects on your skin and hair. You can even cook with argan oil apparently. And it simplifies your beauty routine. No longer will you need to apply ten different products on your skin and hair to combat your various issues. All you’ll have to do is warm up some argan oil by rubbing it between your hands, then rub it into your hair and on your face. And before too long you won’t even be needing to apply makeup. Because argan oil will transform you into a radiant beauty with clear, smooth, airbrush quality skin.

For sure the argan oil hype would be justified if the claims above are true.

But are the claims above true?

We won’t say anything to contradict the people who claim that argan oil has done marvelous things for them. Everybody’s experience will be different. And just because argan oil hasn’t yet transformed us into radiant beauties doesn’t mean the people who say it did that for them are telling false tales.

We did find argan oil useful; but not so useful that we felt it could replace all our other hair and skin products. It’s useful enough to become an additional product in the arsenal; but we wouldn’t rely on it for hardcore things like minimizing fine lines, reducing the visibility of wrinkles, fading dark spots, thickening thinning hair, regrowing balding hair, brightening skin tone, evening skin tone etc..

It does seem to soften hair and make hair look shinier. Used with other product it does seem to help keep lips looking soft and plump. And while it’s still early to say for sure, our resident tester thinks that it combines well with aloe vera gel to give length to eyelashes. She doesn’t want to claim the combination is growing her eyelashes just yet; but it looks promising.

So should you buy into the argan oil hype?

We think the argan oil hype is a bit exaggerated. However, we do believe that argan oil has benefits that make it worth adding to your list of products that you use on your skin and hair. Mostly we think mixing it with other things to enhance them by adding the benefits of argan oil to the benefits your regular products provide is the way to go. You definitely will not throw out all your other products and start relying solely on argan oil. The people who claim they did that probably didn’t have much to fix in the way of bad hair and bad skin.

If you’re working with hair and skin that need major help, you’re going to need more than a bottle of Moroccan argan oil.

But you should definitely include argan oil among your weapons of battle.

For your lips, use it with your preferred lip balm. For your hair, add some to your preferred hair moisturizer. (You’ll definitely want to read about an amazing moisturizer our editor in chief has concocted with argan oil and an unlikely product). For your eyelashes and eye brows (to possibly grow them), mix argan oil with aloe vera and use a clean mascara brush to apply the mixture to your eyelashes and eye brows. For your face, mix it with cinnamon and blackstrap molasses and/or honey and a dash of paprika to create the world’s most amazing exfoliating scrub.

Don’t buy the hype, but do buy the oil. It won’t transform you into a ravishing beauty with thick lustrous hair and radiantly glowing skin. But it will help you in your quest to improve the condition of your skin and your hair and minimize your myriad flaws.
