Lupita Nyong’o is featured in the October issue of Vogue magazine. She appears on the cover looking like an absolute goddess in an amazing gold metallic dress from the Valentino Haute Couture Fall 2015 collection. We can only imagine that the price tag for this dress must be outrageously high. You definitely want to check out the pieces from the Valentino Haute Couture Fall 2015 collection. So many gorgeous dresses. And Lupita was lucky to get to wear at least a couple for her Vogue Shoot.

It must feel pretty amazing to wear that blue Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci Haute Couture lace dress. We’re loving everything about this look. Wanting to recreate it; but it will probably be difficult to find a dress that can pass as a halfway decent alternative to this one. We’re not even going to go checking for the price. Nothing this pretty comes with a price tag that’s in our affordable range.

Give yourself permission to pretend – Lupita Nyong’o

    Lucky girl right?

Every girl should get to experience being able put on luxurious pretty dresses and get her self done up all pretty. At least if she has such a desire. We know not every girl cares about such things and that’s perfectly fine. We’re pretty level-headed down-to-earth girls ourselves. We probably don’t feel about clothes like some other ladies do. We don’t live for fashion. We hate shopping. We’re not particularly materialistic. But we allow ourselves to be vain on occasion. What’s wrong with that? It’s like Lupita says above- “give yourself permission to pretend”. Sometimes it’s nice to pretend you’re a beautiful goddess who deserves to wear Cinderella dresses and glass slippers. It helps to offset all the other times when you think you’re an ugly troll who deserves nothing.

    Ask the Editor

Question: In her Vogue interview Lupita Nyong’o is quoted as saying “When you know a dress is handmade, it completely changes the experience of wearing it.” Do you find this statement to be true?

Editor’s Response: LOL, as if I have ever worn a handmade dress of the sort to which Lupita refers! I’ve worn handmade dresses–ones that I made myself for myself. And yes, it changed the experience of wearing it; but definitely not in the way Lupita means. I suspect if the dress is gorgeous (as the type of dresses to which Lupita no doubt refers must be), then there’s a sense of awe that you must feel in wearing it. But I wouldn’t know. In my case, the dresses I made for myself hold a special memory for me. They were unlike anything else I have ever worn simply because they were made for me specifically–to fit my specific body. So they fit in a way that ready-made clothes could never fit. And then I felt a certain amount of pride in having been able to make myself clothes that I actually dared wear out in public. Again, this is not the sort of thing Lupita is talking about. She’s talking about wearing $10000 hand-beaded dresses that are so beautiful and so well made they make you gasp. At least I’m assuming so.

Question: What do you think of Lupita’s statement “Give yourself permission to pretend“?

Editor’s Response: I think it’s an awesome statement. It resonates with me on many levels. I’m glad I came across the statement. I plan on using it as my mantra from now on when I put on my pretend model hat for Monica’s Closet. So often I cannot give myself permission to pretend. I feel so silly and get all these voices in my head chastising me for trying to be something I’m not. If you read Lupita’s interviews, even she, such an amazingly gorgeous woman as she is, has had to deal with people trying to make her feel like she’s not pretty enough and not good enough. So for someone like me it’s not easy to drown out those voices that try to make me feel silly for having vanity left at an age when women are told they should put away their vanity mirrors. I might not be beautiful in reality; but I sometimes like to pretend. And so Lupita’s words strike a chord with me. From now on I will try to have that thought in the back of my mind while I am pretending. It’s okay to pretend that you’re someone else from time to time. It’s okay to put on make-up and transform yourself into something prettier than you ordinarily look. It’s okay to occasionally dress up and pretend like you’re a goddess or a princess or whatever. It’s okay to feel good about yourself! That’s how you should feel.
