Person One: Why do you think you do not deserve the best in life? When you see the rich and famous wearing their expensive designer clothes you’re full of admiration. So by admiring them you agree that the things they wear are nice things and that people who get to wear such things are lucky and better off and deserving to be admired. But when it’s time to envision yourself wearing expensive designer clothes you start to feel conflicted. Why? On the surface it’s because you think $10000 for a dress is crazy ridiculous. But deep down it’s because you think a $10000 dress is for a special kind of woman. And you don’t consider yourself special enough to deserve a $10000 dress.

Person Two: Er–well, I do think I’m special. But $10000 for a dress is crazy ridiculous unless you have the kind of money those women have who can afford to wear expensive designer clothes. It’s not about being special or not being special. It’s about having money or not having money. And I don’t have money to afford a $10000 dress. If I did have money to afford a $10000 dress then I would buy the $10000 dress if I wanted it. Just like those women do who have the money. Wearing expensive designer clothes doesn’t make any woman special. Rich women aren’t special because they can afford a $10000 Valentino dress. And poor women aren’t “not special” because they can’t afford a $10000 Valentino dress.

Person One: It is true that poor women aren’t “not special” because they can’t afford a $10000 dress; but poor women have a mindset many do not realize they possess. They think that certain heights of success are above them. And by extension they think that the things that come with those certain heights of success are not for them to have, much less for them to want. They will admire other women who can wear expensive designer clothes but they will not question why these women should be so much more fortunate then they are. They accept it as being ‘what it is’. They settle for what they think they deserve because they do not think they are special enough to deserve to have the means to purchase expensive designer clothes, such as this $10000 Valentino dress.
