What are the real benefits of anti wrinkle pillows?

Are there really benefits to using anti wrinkle pillows or is it all just hype?

The beauty business thrives on convincing people that there are a million and one things wrong with them. By controlling what people think and how they feel about themselves, beauty product manufacturers can sell people a million and one different products that promise to fix their million and one flaws. Many of the beauty products peddled to consumers turn out to be all hype and no substance. If you believe some of the reviews from people who have used anti wrinkle pillows, these beauty pillows are no different from any products that promise to help combat the signs of aging. Yet, the internet abounds with articles about anti wrinkle pillows that make them out to be an absolute necessity if you want to safeguard against static wrinkles. So is that all a case of people jumping on a bandwagon and hyping up the idea that anti wrinkle pillows can help you look your best? Or are there really benefits to using an anti wrinkle pillow?

See that sleeping beauty in the picture? See that purple thingy underneath her head? That’s one of the popular brands of anti wrinkle pillows out there which, according to the maker and to some of the people using the pillow (including well known celebrities), will “improve the quality of your rest and help minimize sleep lines that can be etched into your skin from sleeping on your side”, as well as help you “achieve healthier, more rested-looking skin overnight”.

Do you hear that? Anti wrinkle pillows can help you achieve healthier more rested-looking skin overnight!

Read that literally and it’s really not all that outrageous a claim. Basically, all it’s saying is that the difference between sleeping on the Nurse Jamie Beauty Bearâ„¢ Age Delay Pillow and your regular old ordinary pillow, is that the nurse Jamie Pillow is designed to help you sleep in a way that will protect your face from looking like the face of a sad old dog when you wake up in the morning. Because the pillow is designed in such a way that your face will not get smashed and scrunched up throughout the night. So in the morning, you will have fewer “static wrinkles” aka sleep wrinkles, and fewer of the other not so pretty signs of wear and tear like giant under eye bags and sagging cheeks and so on.

So these people aren’t really promising that their anti wrinkle pillow is going to get rid of your wrinkles and make you look younger. They are saying that by virtue of waking up with fewer “sleep lines” and a less saggy looking face, you will automatically look healthier and more rested. You will look better than you typically look when you wake up in the morning from sleeping on your non-specialized every day pillow. The pillow isn’t going to change your life by erasing your existing wrinkles. It’s not going to restore your depleting supply of collagen. It’s not going to restore your skin’s elasticity. It’s just going to help you keep away the extra damage that happens every night when you are sleeping with your face smudged and smashed against a pillow that is not designed to protect it.

So do we need anti wrinkle pillows or are there free ways that we can protect our face while we sleep?

There is definitely a free way that you can protect your face while you sleep. You can sleep on your back. Many of the anti wrinkle pillows out there are designed to be used with you sleeping on your back. Because sleeping on your back is said to be the best way to protect your face while you sleep. So if you don’t want to spend money on a so-called beauty pillow, you can try to develop a habit for sleeping on your back. If you already sleep on your back, you are probably already enjoying the benefits of anti wrinkle pillows without being aware of it. You probably usually wake up looking pretty well rested because your face has not been through the wringer being smashed and smudged and pressed against your pillow through the night.

But keep in mind if you are not a back sleeper that it’s not so easy to train yourself to sleep on your back. That is why anti wrinkle pillows come in handy. Because they are designed with this in mind, knowing that people who sleep on their stomach and their sides have difficulty sleeping on their backs.

However, difficult does not mean impossible. So if you prefer not to invest in any of the available sleep wrinkle pillows on the market, you can begin to train yourself to sleep on your back. We stomach and side sleepers here at Best Beauty Pillow are in the process of doing just that.

But how do you train yourself to sleep on your back?

We’ll discuss how to train yourself to sleep on your back after this Featured Product intermission…

JuveRest The Sleep Wrinkle Pillow with Cover

According to the product description on Amazon.com, the JuveRest sleep wrinkle pillow “is a new-and-effective way to deal with facial wrinkles”. The Juverest pillow was apparently designed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. The claims about the pillow is that it “minimizes facial contact with the pillow surface, inhibiting sleep wrinkle formation”.

In a way the description is a little bit misleading because it gives the impression that if you already have facial wrinkles, a Juverest pillow can help you deal with your existing wrinkles. But keep in mind that this is not the case, and the wording is clever because it can make people with wrinkles think that the JuveRest beauty pillow can help them fight their current wrinkles. But by “deal with facial wrinkles”, all they mean is that the JuveRest sleep wrinkle pillow will help you deal with the wrinkles that you wake up with in the morning after a rough night battering your face on your pillow while sleeping on your back or your side.

The way the Juverest pillow works, according to the description, is that it “encourages sleep positions that reduce damage to facial skin”.

The pillow is said to be “soft and comfortable” and it claims to promote “correct neck and back anatomical alignment”.

Like many other of the popular brands of beauty pillows, this one claims a multi-patented design. Pretty is not a word that necessarily comes to mind when you look at the JuveRest pillow, but if the design does help your skin to maintain it’s youthful appearance, would you care if it’s pretty or not?

From the product description on Amazon.com, the pillow is made from “special high quality, soft, open-cell, resilient foam” that provides “comfortable support”. And the “open structure” of the pillow is claimed to allow “efficient air circulation” to keep you cooler at night.

Reviews of the JuveRest sleep wrinkle pillow appear to be mixed, with some people claiming it’s amazing and wonderful, and other people describing it as “horrible” and uncomfortable.

It is claimed on the JuveRest website that tests show 1700% less facial distortion when using the JuveRest pillow.

The test they reference is said to have been an “independent clinical study of 40 participants where half slept on a JuveRest pillow and half slept on a traditional pillow for 4 hours.” It probably isn’t a good idea to rely on the results of such a test.

They also reference another independent study conducted by Precision Opinion, Inc. in March 2014. They claim that 89% of participants in that study “found their skin looked better after using the JuveRest pillow for eight weeks”

According to them participants in the study reported that after using a JuveRest pillow for eight weeks:

  • Their skin looked smoother, with fewer wrinkles
  • Their skin looked and felt more refreshed
  • They looked less tired
  • Their face and eyes weren’t puffy in the morning
  • They experienced fewer or no skin breakouts
  • Improvement in Skin Using JuveRest Pillow

Would you pass on the JuveRest pillow because it will mess up the aesthetics of your bed?

Some people are very particular when it comes to their bed. They want their bedroom to look a certain way. They want balance on both sides of the bed. So how do you include a pillow with a non-traditional pillow design in your bedroom decor? Very simple, buy two of the anti wrinkle beauty pillow you decide to use.

Anti wrinkle beauty pillows are not just for women. So if you share your bed with a male, there’s no need to think he can’t use a beauty pillow as well. Of course, many men hang on to ideas and attitudes about certain products that they consider to be women’s products. So it could be challenging to convince your bed mate to go to bed every night resting his head on some of the anti wrinkle pillows that are on the market. The JuveRest pillow looks to be fairly substantial in size and could be easier to convince him to use.

How to train yourself to sleep on your back

Since we haven’t yet conquered our goal to train ourselves to sleep on our backs, we won’t pretend that we have any surefire tips and tricks to share with you. But we will say that, just by virtue of getting some parts of our nightly sleep with our face protected thanks to sleeping on our back for some periods of the time, we are seeing improvements in our appearance when we wake up in the morning. At least one of us has been seeing the ramifications of not getting enough hours of sleep for as many as 10 years in a row, and not sleeping soundly during those few hours of sleep, tossing here and turning there, sleeping on one side for some of the hours, sleeping on the other side for the rest of the hours, always with her face smudged and smashed and pressed into a pillow that hasn’t been changed in way too long on pillow cases that really belong in the garbage (okay okay, that someone is me myself and I).

Someone who goes through what we’ve just described isn’t someone who wakes up looking her best every morning. And with that routine ongoing over a decade, the toll finally became noticeable in the last couple of years. The bags under her my eyes became more pronounced than usual, and the sides of her my face where her my cheek gets smashed during side-sleeping or stomach sleeping with her my face turned to one side or another, began to droop and sag prematurely.

You can find tips for training yourself to sleep on your back all over the internet.  We came across some articles on the website byrdie.com. They are ‘How I Finally Trained Myself to Sleep on My Back‘ and ‘How To Sleep On Your Back‘. Also via the website thesleepjudge.com, these tips are included in their article titled ‘Sleeping on your back and how to effectively do it‘.

  1. Lay flat on your back
  2. Put a pillow under your knees
  3. Put your hands up by your pillow
  4. Spread your legs out a little
  5. Stay on your back

Any other alternatives to anti wrinkle pillows other than training yourself to sleep on your back?

There are claims that silk pillow cases provide a similar benefit to anti wrinkle pillows. Silk pillowcases are said to have the ability to help improve the health of your skin and to help minimize the appearance of wrinkles. With silk pillow cases you won’t have to worry about having your bed aesthetics upset by having a weirdly shaped pillow on your side and a regular pillow on the other side.

Silk material is said to be good for helping to protect your skin from things that will typically cause you to break out which adhere more easily to cotton and other non-silk material out of which your every day pillow case is made. You will even find claims that silk pillow cases can help to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. However, it makes sense to question that claim on the basis of the claims of anti wrinkle pillows. It doesn’t seem highly likely that the material of your pillow case alone can have the impact that sleep wrinkle pillows are claimed to have. If sleep wrinkle pillows require patented designs that keep your face cradled and off your pillow, then how can a silk pillow case by itself be enough to prevent the smashing and smudging and pressing of your face into your pillow that is said to be the cause of sleep wrinkles? So the claim that silk pillow cases can help to minimize facial wrinkles might be a little bit of a stretch. However, sleeping with your face on a silk pillow case instead of on a cotton pillow case will ensure a more gentle experience for your face if nothing else.

Some claims made about silk pillow cases

  • A silk pillow case will not suck in the moisturizers and anti aging creams and products that you put on your face at night, so you don’t have to worry that your skin care products will be absorbed into your pillow case instead of staying on your face and doing the job of helping you to combat nature’s will while you sleep.
  • A silk pillow case will protect your hair from breaking off or splitting at the ends while you toss and turn in your sleep
  • Because silk is hypoallergenic, it will protect you from allergens that can cause your skin to break out and cause you to wake up covered in pimples and other acne bumps.

Singer songwriter Adelamonica AKA Avenue Sixty editor in chief. Writing as Monica for The Monica Archives. Writing has always been one of my passions. In fact, when I was a teenager, I used to tell people they should remember my name, because I was going to become a famous author. I used to live to write and write to live--not in the sense of writing for income but writing to combat depression and to feel a sense of purpose. I've written novels, poems, articles and essays that I tried unsuccessfully to get published over many years starting in my teens. When I discovered blogging several ages ago, I turned to that avenue as a means of doing what I love without having to worry about publishers and their rejection letters. Modeling is also something I have always enjoyed and something I wanted very badly to do as a teenager. So badly that I used to lie and tell people I was a model. I would carry around a large portfolio style photo album and claim it was my modeling portfolio. But, as with my writing, the people with the power to make my modeling dreams come true saw nothing in me that made them stop me in the streets of New York to offer me a modeling contract with their agency. So when I discovered the ability to photograph my own self (before cell phones and selfies) I took up a hobby of pretend modeling at home and that hobby has remained with me throughout my life as a form of self expression and self therapy. I ask that you kindly excuse my lack of worldliness and any instances where I demonstrate lack of tact or lack of knowledge and even lack of basic intelligence in my writing and posing. I'm just here trying to have a little fun doing the things that make me happy. I'm just an average human for whom writing and posing and singing and dancing and the other things I do are ways I express myself and keep myself going on this ever challenging journey of life. I hope you will find something even remotely useful or interesting in the things I share.
