Let’s say you’ve been invited to your married male friend’s birthday party. You’re beautiful. You’re sexy. You like to flaunt what you’ve got. You like to outdo every other woman around you. But should you try to outdo even the wife of your male friend at her own husband’s birthday party?

Kim Kardashian vs Chrissy Teigen

John Legend recently celebrated his 36th birthday with a party in NYC that was attended by Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Kim wore a very sexy ensemble to the party. She wore a black dress that revealed major cleavage and lots of leg. Everybody knows Kim is sexy and she likes to flaunt what she’s got. And why shouldn’t she? But is this one occasion when maybe she should have tried to tone it down a bit and allowed John Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen to be the belle of her husband’s bash?

Not that Chrissy wasn’t holding her own. She was dressed in an even more revealing dress than the dress Kim was wearing. But one can’t help but wonder if she dressed in such a revealing outfit because she felt like she had to go all out to be able to compete with Kim.

Kim posted some pictures from the party on her Instagram page

Kim’s a force to be reckoned with no doubt; but it does look from some of the pictures like the real star of the show and his wife took a backseat to Kim and Kanye. Particularly in the picture with Kim and Kanye kissing while Chrissy and John are in the shot looking like secondary figures.

Should you consider the hostess when choosing what to wear to a party?

For many of us the answer will be yes if the hostess is attractive. And we won’t be considering her in terms of trying to give her the stage. We’ll be considering her in terms of trying to figure out how we can outdo her or at the very least compete with her. At the same time we wouldn’t like to be on the receiving end of other women showing up to our party, especially a party for our husband, looking and acting like they think they are the center of the universe.

No disrespect to Kim. I mean, she is kind of the center of the universe right now. But maybe that is all the more reason she can afford to step aside sometimes and let another woman have the limelight. Because she’s already got it all and them some.

As for the rest of us, maybe we shouldn’t show up to parties trying to outdo the hostess or the wife/girlfriend of the host. Not suggesting that was Kim’s intention. I’m sure she dressed the way she did for herself and for her husband. But that’s the whole point. Maybe she should have been thinking not just about herself and her husband but about proper style etiquette for attending a married male friend’s birthday party. No one’s saying wear a potato sack; but maybe leave the dress with the plunging neckline and high thigh slit for when you’re going out with your guy on a private outing or for an event where no one in particular should by right be the belle of the ball.
