There’s not going to be a right and wrong answer to the question “What color shoes goes best with a red dress?” This is one of those matter of opinion things where personal style affects how you answer. There’s probably a standard fashion rule; but fashion rules are arbitrary. Fashion rules still began with one person’s opinion that he or she managed to get people to accept and follow.

Looking around at pictures on the internet of women in red dresses famous and not famous you’ll see that many chose to go with black shoes. Black is always a safe color; but there are plenty of other colors you’ll find as well including colors that you might not expect someone to wear with a red dress such as blue yellow and green.

These metallic bronze/gold colors go nicely with the red dresses. Metallic shoes have at one point seemed to become almost as safe a choice as black, with gold and silver metallic hues being paired with a wide variety of colors.

Red dress with blue shoes?

Blue shoes probably wouldn’t be a color you’d ordinarily consider wearing with a red dress; but if you stepped out wearing blue shoes with a red dress you wouldn’t be the first to try this unlikely color combination. Katie Holmes was once seen on the red carpet wearing blue shoes with a red dress. So has Carey Mulligan and they probably aren’t the only ones to have ever done it.

The set above features a TARA JARMON Bright Orange red Silk Bustier Dress. The dress comes with a metallic gold-tone belt but I’ve replaced the gold belt with a blue Lauren by Ralph Lauren Leather belt with a gold horse shoe buckle. The blue belt helps to make the MICHAEL Michael Kors Blue Aria Suede Platform Sandals blend more seamlessly with the orange red dress. A blue Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Lil Ukita Bag is thrown in to complete the look.

Ask the Editor

Would you ever wear yellow shoes with a red dress? If not why not?

Answer: No, I would never wear yellow shoes with a red dress. But I’ve seen it done. Tyra Banks wore yellow pumps with a red dress some time back in 2010. And although she made a few people’s list of Fashion Don’ts, I thought she looked perfectly fine. But then again it could have been that she was so pretty. You know how when someone is ridiculously pretty just about anything they wear looks great? Like Adriana Lima could wear a potato sack and look seriously hot? That could have been what made Tyra’s yellow pumps red shoes combination look perfectly stylish. But I think the combination isn’t as atrocious in reality as it seems on paper. I’ve seen a few other ladies wearing yellow shoes with a red dress and they looked fine too. I, however, would not personally have the courage to go out wearing yellow shoes with a red dress. At least I don’t think so. But who knows? Sometimes I surprise myself.

Would you ever wear green shoes with a red dress?

Answer: For the same reason that I wouldn’t wear yellow shoes with a red dress I wouldn’t wear green shoes with a red dress. I just wouldn’t have the courage to be so bold. But note the words I have used. Courage is a good thing. It is a good thing to be bold. The opposite of both of these words means one is too afraid to take chances and there is nothing great about that. So while I would not personally wear green shoes with a red dress it isn’t because I think there’s something wrong with the combination. It’s fashion. I don’t believe there can be a right and wrong when it comes to what people choose to wear. Fashion is about choice. You have a choice. And when you have a choice you should have the courage and be bold enough to wear whatever the heck you want. Because you’re free to do that and freedom is an precious thing. Take full advantage of the freedoms that you have!  Other people and fear of their opinion should not dictate what you wear. I know that, and I believe that firmly. And now that I’ve reminded myself of it I think I’ll change my answer. If the mood strikes me one day to go out wearing green shoes with a red dress then yes, I would do it. Who cares if someone thinks you look like you should have christmas lights wrapped around you turned on and flickering? In fact I think I’m going to plan on making a point of going out wearing green shoes with a red dress one of these days to prove to myself that I don’t dress for other people’s approval.
