Who is Maggie Marilyn?
Maggie Marilyn is a New Zealand based fashion designer and eponymous brand. The brand Maggie Marilyn was launched in 2016, with their debut collection exclusively sold at net-a-porter. So yes, as you might guess, the label is high end, or as the designer describes it in a Q&A found via Stylebop.com, the brand is a about ‘livable luxury’. In other words, if you cannot afford the luxury of spending $500 on a skirt, while Maggie Marilyn clothing is relatively affordable by comparison to other high end brands, it is probably still too much luxury for you. But should you find yourself with a few extra dollars and something from the line catches your attention, you can at least take comfort knowing that should you act on your impulse and purchase the item, you will be purchasing something that you will be able to wear in your every day regular-girl life. You don’t need to have a glamorous high end life for Maggie Marilyn clothing have a place in your wardrobe.
From the stylebop.com Q&A with Maggie Marilyn, the designer says the following in answer to the question “Can a young label champion forward-thinking design and ethical production?”
As much as I want to build a brand that is luxurious, it is always about ‘livable luxury’ – being able to really wear the pieces from the collection every day. That type of luxury means beautiful fabrics and striking garment execution but also something that a wider audience can afford so it remains attainable. To me, luxury ultimately means having a brand that is transparent and that makes the right choices as we all live in this world and have the power to impact it in a positive way.
Maggie Marilyn the designer is described in the about page on the brand’s website as being ambitious and passionate and “determined to not only make clothes for living beautifully but to also make a change for good in an industry that itself is reflecting on constant speculation regarding its ethical and environmental footprint”.
About the brand’s aesthetic, it is said on the website that they “draw together the opulence of silk with utilitarian denims, drills and poplins” to create “textural combinations denoting new rules of modernity”.
Basically they mix and match materials and textures and all that good stuff, and they design styles that are modern and that hold up to the standard of luxury while still having about them a “lightness of spirit”.
